Practical guides describe methods that work in typical conditions. Your conditions are yours to judge. Before starting, satisfy yourself that the task suits your skill, your tools, your materials, and the state of what you are working on, and stop if it turns out not to.

Where a guide and one of those sources disagree, follow the source and treat the guide as wrong. Use the protective equipment a job calls for.
Bring in a qualified professional for anything structural, electrical, gas, or plumbing beyond simple maintenance. Changing a washer or clearing a trap is maintenance. Opening a wall, altering wiring or a circuit, touching a gas appliance or line, moving pipework, or working on anything load bearing is not, and in many places that work is legally reserved for licensed trades in any case. Rented property adds a second rule: check with the landlord before altering anything.
