Match the fix to the hole size. Nail and screw holes up to about half an inch take lightweight spackle, a putty knife, and ten minutes plus dry time. Holes from half an inch to about three inches, which covers most doorknob strikes, take a self-adhesive mesh patch under two or three thin coats of joint compound. Fist-sized damage, roughly three to six inches across, takes a California patch, a plug cut from scrap drywall that carries its own paper border and needs no lumber behind the wall. Anything wider than six inches means cutting back to the studs, covered briefly at the end.

Quick answer: Fill holes under half an inch with lightweight spackle and wipe flush. Cover holes up to three inches with a fiberglass mesh patch and two or three thin coats of joint compound feathered several inches past the patch. Close three-to-six-inch holes with a California patch cut from scrap drywall. Every version disappears for the same reasons: thin coats, full dry time between them, a light sanding, and primer before paint.

Step 1: gather the materials before you open anything

You need a small tub of lightweight spackle, a bag of setting-type joint compound with 20 or 45 printed on it, a 6-inch flexible putty knife plus a narrow one around 2 inches, a self-adhesive fiberglass mesh patch at least 6 by 6 inches, a fine sanding sponge in the 180-to-220 grit range, and a can of stain-blocking primer. For fist-sized holes, add a scrap of half-inch drywall a few inches larger than the hole and a drywall jab saw. A utility knife, a flashlight, and a drill should already live in your basic tool kit.

One distinction matters most. Spackle is for holes smaller than a coin: it dries in under half an hour, shrinks little, and sands easily. Joint compound is for everything bigger, because it spreads thin and feathers out to an invisible edge. Do not fill a big hole with spackle or skim a wall with it; each material fails at the other’s job.

Step 2: fill nail and screw holes

Knock down the rim first. A nail hole usually has a small ridge of crushed paint around it, and one pass with the corner of the putty knife flattens it. Load a dab of spackle on the narrow knife, press it into the hole from two directions, then hold the blade nearly flat against the wall and wipe once to leave the fill flush. Stop there. Overworking wet spackle pulls it back out of the hole.

Give it 15 to 30 minutes. Deep screw holes sometimes dimple as they dry, so check under a raking light and add a second skim if you see a hollow. Sand with two or three light strokes of the sponge, no more.

A nail pop is a different problem: if the same bump keeps returning, the fastener is backing out of the stud. Drive a drywall screw an inch above the pop and another an inch below, sinking each head just under the paper without tearing it. Then reset or pull the original nail and fill all three dents as above.

Step 3: cover holes up to three inches with a mesh patch

Cut away anything hanging: torn face paper, loose gypsum crumbs, flaking paint. Compound bonds only to solid material, and a flap of loose paper telegraphs through every coat you put over it. Peel the backing off the mesh patch, center it over the hole, and press the adhesive border down hard.

Mix setting compound to the thickness of peanut butter. Pull the first coat across the patch with the 6-inch knife, pressing so compound squeezes through the mesh and grips the wall behind it. Cover the mesh completely but keep the coat thin; the grid should still ghost through. A bag stamped 20 gives you about 20 minutes of working time and is usually hard enough to recoat within an hour or two.

The second and third coats are about width, not depth. Extend each one 2 to 3 inches past the last on every side, feathering the edge to nothing by tilting the knife and bearing down on its outside corner. The hump you are hiding is real, since the patch sits on top of the wall plane. The only way to fool the eye is to spread that transition across 10 or 12 inches of wall.

Field note: Premixed compound in the plastic tub handles all of this and sands more easily than a setting mix. The trade is time. Premixed dries by evaporation, which can mean a full day between coats in a humid room, so a three-coat repair stretches across three days. A 20-minute setting bag finishes the same repair in an afternoon. Buy the bag, mix small batches, and rinse the knife before each batch hardens on it.

Step 4: close fist-sized holes with a California patch

Cut the plug first. From scrap drywall, cut a rectangle about 4 inches wider and 4 inches taller than the hole. On the back, score a line 2 inches in from each edge with the utility knife, snap the gypsum along each score, and peel it off the face paper. You are left with a gypsum core in the middle and a 2-inch border of bare paper all around. That paper flange is the whole trick; it does the job tape does on a normal seam.

Hold the plug over the damage, core against the wall, and trace the core. Before you cut, check what is behind the wall with a flashlight and a bent wire through the existing hole. Cables normally run vertically above and below outlets and switches, so give any nearby box a wide margin, and keep the saw strokes shallow at first in case something sits close.

Cut the traced rectangle out with the jab saw and dry-fit the plug. It should drop in with a little slack rather than force. Spread a band of compound about 2 inches wide around the opening, press the plug in flush, and smooth the paper flange into the wet compound, working from the center of each side outward the way you would push bubbles out of a sticker. Skim one thin coat over the whole assembly and let it set. Two more coats, each wider and feathered, finish it exactly like the mesh patch in step 3. No backing boards and no screws; for holes in this size range, the glued flange carries the load.

Step 5: sand, prime, and paint until the repair disappears

Sanding should be a touch-up, never a rescue. If the coats went on thin, 15 or 20 light passes with the fine sponge levels everything. Hold a flashlight flat against the wall so the beam rakes across the repair; ridges and hollows throw shadows you can see long before you can feel them. Fill a hollow with another skim instead of trying to sand the surrounding wall down to meet it. Wipe off the dust with a barely damp cloth, because paint will not hold onto powder.

Then prime, without exception. Bare compound absorbs paint at a different rate than the painted wall around it, so an unprimed repair reads as a dull square under any side light. Painters call it flashing. One coat of primer over the repair, then paint a few inches past the primed area with a small roller, since roller texture matches the wall better than brush strokes. If the wall color has faded, paint the whole wall corner to corner. Touch-up paint that almost matches points a finger at a repair nobody would otherwise find.

When a patch is the wrong repair

Some damage disqualifies itself. A hole wider than about 6 inches flexes too much for a paper flange, so the fix becomes a stud-to-stud patch: square the hole off to a clean rectangle reaching the nearest studs, screw a new piece of drywall to the wood, and tape the seams. Same finishing work, more carpentry in front of it.

Soft or water-stained drywall is a stop sign of another kind. Fix the leak first, cut out everything soft, and seal any brown staining with stain-blocking primer before compound touches it, or the stain bleeds through the finished repair. Cracks radiating from door and window corners come from framing movement; they need mesh tape across the crack, because filler alone reopens with the next humidity swing.
