Blot, never rub. Flush cold water through the back of the fabric so the stain leaves the way it arrived rather than driving deeper. Keep heat away until the mark is gone, which rules out hot water, the dryer, the iron, and the hair dryer someone will suggest. Those three moves open almost every stain job, and making them within two minutes matters more than the perfect product an hour later. What comes next depends on what the stain is made of.
Quick answer: Lift or blot away whatever sits on the surface, flush cold water through the back of the fabric, then treat by type: enzyme detergent for protein, an acid or oxygen soak for tannin, a degreaser for oil, alcohol for dye and ink. Heat sets nearly everything, so nothing goes in the dryer until the fabric checks clean in daylight. When two components are present, remove the greasy one first, because oil blocks every water-based treatment behind it.
What sets a stain permanently
Four things turn a removable mark into a permanent one, and all four are decisions rather than accidents.
Heat is the worst. Hot water, a dryer cycle, or an iron coagulates protein into the fiber, bakes oil into a translucent patch, and drives tannin past the reach of any soak. Treat cold, wash cold, and inspect in daylight before the load sees a dryer.
Time is second. A wet stain sits on the surface; a dried one has moved inside the fiber, and several types darken as they oxidize, which is why yesterday’s coffee ring reads brown rather than tan. Anything older than a day needs a long soak.
The wrong chemical is third. Bar soap sets tannin. Chlorine bleach yellows protein stains and destroys wool and silk. Enzyme detergent digests protein, which is what blood needs and what a silk blouse cannot survive, because silk is protein too.
Friction is fourth. Rubbing pushes color sideways and abrades the fiber, leaving a fuzzed patch where the mark used to be. Blot straight down with a white cloth, moving to a clean section each time.

Protein stains: blood, dairy, egg, sweat
Blood, egg, milk, and the yellow that builds up in shirt underarms. Hot water does the most harm here, because heat sets protein into fabric the same way it sets an egg in a pan.
Sequence: rinse from the back under cold running water until it runs clear. Soak 30 minutes in cold water, changing it once. Work a few drops of enzyme detergent into the damp mark with a fingertip, wait 15 minutes, then launder cold.
Dried blood takes an hour’s soak in cold water with 1 tablespoon of salt per cup before the enzyme step. On white cotton, 3% hydrogen peroxide dabbed on lifts what remains, though it lightens some dyes, so test a hidden seam first.
Underarm yellowing is protein plus aluminum salts from antiperspirant, so plain detergent never touches it. Soak the area 30 minutes in cold water cut with white vinegar, roughly one part to three, then wash with oxygen bleach. Chlorine bleach drives that yellow darker.
Sets it permanently: heat at any stage, plus antiperspirant buildup left for years.
Tannin stains: coffee, tea, wine, fruit
Coffee, tea, red wine, fruit juice, soda, and beer. Plant tannins dissolve readily while wet and grow stubborn as they oxidize.
Fresh: flush from the back with cold water, more than feels reasonable, then soak 30 minutes in cool water holding 1 tablespoon of white vinegar per cup and launder.
Dried: soak up to 8 hours in warm water with oxygen bleach at the package dose, then wash normally. On white cotton or linen, 3% hydrogen peroxide with a drop of dish soap, left on 20 minutes, clears most of what the soak leaves. On colored fabric, repeat the vinegar soak instead of escalating.
Sets it permanently: heat, sunlight on a dried stain, and bar soap. Scrubbing a tannin spill with hand soap at a restaurant sink is the classic route to a permanent tan mark.
Oil and grease stains
Butter, salad dressing, lotion, sunscreen, machine oil, and the anonymous spots down a shirt front. Water does nothing useful here. It spreads the edge outward into a ring.
Sequence: cover the mark with cornstarch, baking soda, or plain talc and leave it 30 minutes to pull oil out of the weave, then brush it away. Work in a few drops of grease-cutting dish soap and leave it 10 minutes. Wash in the hottest water the care label permits, since oil is the one category where warm water helps, provided no protein is mixed in.
Old grease takes two or three rounds of dish soap, then rubbing alcohol blotted on with a cotton pad.
Sets it permanently: the dryer. Heat polymerizes oil inside the fiber, leaving a dark translucent patch that reads as permanently damp. An invisible oil spot that has been through a dryer reappears the next time the fabric warms up.
Field note: Salt and club soda are delaying tactics rather than treatments. Salt on spilled wine absorbs liquid before it spreads, and club soda does what plain cold water would do. Both buy a few minutes. Neither removes anything, and a stain that got salt and was then left to dry has still been left to dry.
Dye stains: grass, berry, color transfer
Grass, berries, hair dye, mustard, red clay, and dye that migrated off another garment in the wash. These are pigment, so the aim is to move the color into something else rather than dissolve it.
Sequence: lay the stain face down on a folded white towel. Wet a cotton pad with rubbing alcohol and blot the back of the fabric, pushing dye out into the towel. Shift to a clean section every few blots, or you reapply what you just lifted. Finish with detergent and an oxygen bleach soak of up to 8 hours.
Grass carries chlorophyll and protein together, so add the enzyme step. Turmeric, the yellow in mustard, breaks down in daylight, so leave the damp garment in sun after washing. Dye transfer across a whole load is a separate job: a long oxygen soak for every affected white item, run before anything meets heat.

Ink and marker stains
Treatment depends on the pen. Ballpoint ink is dye suspended in oil, felt tip and rollerball are usually water-based, and permanent marker is dye in a solvent engineered to stay put.
Ballpoint: white towel underneath, rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad, blot the back, and change the towel section constantly. Alcohol hand sanitizer works the same way. Finish with dish soap to lift the oil carrier, then wash cold.
Water-based inks: flush with cold water until the color thins, then detergent, then a soak. Permanent marker takes alcohol, repeatedly, and usually fades to a shadow rather than vanishing.
Sets it permanently: heat, and scrubbing, which turns a pen line into a gray halo three times its original size.
Combination stains and the order they demand
Most household stains are mixtures, and mixtures fail when the steps run in the wrong order. Oil forms a waterproof layer, so treating it second means the water-based step never reaches the pigment underneath. Grease first, protein second, leftover color last.
- Lipstick and foundation are oil plus pigment: dish soap, then alcohol blotting.
- Chocolate is fat, protein, and tannin: powder and dish soap, then a cold enzyme soak, then oxygen bleach.
- Gravy and cream sauces are fat and protein: dish soap in cool water, then enzyme detergent.
- Coffee with milk is tannin and protein: cold flush and enzyme first, then the vinegar soak.
Keep the water cool whenever protein is in play.

Fabrics that change the rules
Wool and silk are protein fibers, so enzyme detergent attacks the cloth along with the stain. Use a pH-neutral wool wash, cold water, and patient blotting. Chlorine bleach dissolves both and wrecks the elastic in spandex blends. Acetate dissolves in acetone, so nail polish remover on an acetate lining makes a hole rather than a clean spot.
Leather and suede never get flooded. Oil lifts with cornstarch left on overnight and brushed off, and a water ring evens out by lightly damping the whole panel instead of the spot.
Carpet and upholstery hide the real problem underneath. Soaking drives the stain into the padding, where it wicks back to the surface a day later, so use the least liquid the treatment allows, blot with plain water, then press dry under a towel weighted with a book. Test anything stronger than cold water on a hidden seam first.
A permanent mark is not always the end of a garment. A stain 2 inches above a trouser hem disappears once the hem is turned, and the hand stitches used to reattach a button or close a hem do that job in twenty minutes.
Four questions that decide the hard cases
Does a dryer really set stains, or is that folklore?
Real, and mechanical rather than mysterious. Dryer heat coagulates protein, oxidizes tannin, and turns liquid oil into a solid bonded to the fiber. The invisible case matters most: a clear oil splash that survived the wash looks fine leaving the dryer, then darkens permanently once the fabric gets warm.
Is chlorine bleach ever the right choice?
On white cotton and linen, diluted, for tannin and general dinginess. Nowhere else. It yellows protein stains, dissolves wool and silk, ruins elastic, and spots colored fabric. Never combine it with ammonia or a cleaner containing ammonia, since the mixture releases chloramine gas. Oxygen bleach is slower and safe on colors, which makes it the better default.
How old is too old to bother?
It depends on the category. Oil and ink stay treatable for months because neither oxidizes much on its own. Tannin and dye harden with age but still respond to an overnight oxygen soak. Protein that has been through a dryer is usually finished. Give any old stain one long soak and one full treatment before calling it.
Are pretreatment sprays worth carrying?
A small bottle of dish soap and a few alcohol wipes handle grease, dye, and ink, which covers most trouble away from home. Neither replaces the first step: cold water and a napkin blotted from the back of the fabric within two minutes remove more than any product applied an hour later.
